Roman funerary portraits

Roman funerary portraits

Funerary portraits of Roman mummies. Found in Egypt in 1887 at the oasis of Fayum. Dated to the 2nd century CE.

Those portraits were painted on wood using an encaustic technique; then those were attached to coffin. The portraits prove that the Romans were fascinated by Egyptian culture and some of cultural patterns were joined.

Currently located in Altes Museum in Berlin.
