Phrixus and Helle in a Roman fresco
Phrixos and Helle on Roman fresco

Roman fresco depicting Phrixos and Helle, dated back to I century CE. Object found in Pompeii.

Phrixos and Helle were the children Athamas, king of Boeotia, and his first wife. Ino, the second wife, wanted to get rid of Athamas’s children. To rescue his siblings came a winged ram with a golden fleece that went east. As they flew over the strait separating Europe of Asia, Helle felt to the sea and died. To commemorate this event, the Greeks called this place – Hellespont.
